A dominant figure in the hillside of Houki Town

Oni Museum and Oni Ko Land

If you happen to be in Houki Town, Tottori Prefecture or perhaps on your way to Tottori Flower Park, you will certainly see a gigantic statue perched upon a building with a bright red Shinto gate in front of it. The statue is an oni or “demon”, a figure popular in both traditional Japanese folklore and popular culture. This particular demon guards the entrance to the Oni Museum and Oni Ko Land.

The museum hosts multi-media images related to the history of oni and displays a varied collection of eye-catching masks and statues. The entrance fee is 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for children.

Paired with the museum is Oni Ko Land (Oni Child Land). It is a large playground full of incredibly long roller slides, a miniature locomotive and climbing forts. General admission is free but some attractions require a fee.

Oni Ko Land is open daily from 9:00am to 5:00pm from April to November. It is closed from December to March and on Tuesdays and national holidays throughout the year. If a national holiday falls on a Tuesday, the playground will be closed the following day.

Access: Oni Museum and Oni Ko Land are accessible by taxi from Mizoguchi Station on the Sannin train line.
