Tottori City is home to Japan’s most extensive sand dune formation and greets visitors from around the world. Facing the Japan Sea, the dunes stretch 16 kilometers from east to west and are around two kilometers wide. Anchored by evergreen trees, this natural anomaly known for its golden sands and steep slopes that create a stunning landscape.
One of the most interesting things about the dunes is that they have become an unsuspected gathering place. On any given day, dozens, if not hundreds of people are on the hills enjoying themselves. In a country known for high technology and spectacular architectural marvels, it is a wonder to see people come together in such a natural setting. People of all ages can be seen running up and down the dunes, taking photos, rolling in the sand and even paragliding.
Given the sheer number of visitors to the dunes, one can only speculate as to the reason for the special attraction they have. There may some primal attraction to the landscape itself which contains a natural corridor that leads to the coast. As if on a pilgrimage, people scatter across a landscape that at times seems otherworldly with deep ravines and pools of water that reflect light in all the colors of the rainbow.
There are several points of interested near the dunes, including the Sand Dune Museum, a children’s theme park and a free campground.There is also a resort in the area for those who need a bit more comfort.
If you happen to be in town or have put Tottori on your list of travel destinations, the dunes cannot be missed. Put yourself between the immensity of the sea and this expanse of sand for a unique experience.
Access: From Okayama City Take the Super Inaba Express train to Tottori Station (about 2 hours). Then take the Nikko or Hinomaru bus to the Tottori Sand Dunes.

2) Reservations: Fill out the application contact form; application is complete upon payment. Reservations accepted by phone, mail, fax, online, or other communicative methods. The contract is not valid at time of reservation; the customer will be asked to submit an application form and payment within 3 days from time of reservation. If application form and payment are not submitted within the term, the reservation shall be considered void.
3) Items not included in tour price: Transportation costs not included in itinerary, optional tour fees, excess baggage fees, any fees of a personal nature (phone bills, meal costs, etc.) Items excluded from the tour will be stated in the tour information.
4) Cancellation fees: When the application is cancelled by the customer or when payment has not been made by the specified date, Ryobi Tours shall receive a percentage of the per person tour fee as a cancellation fee, or a penalty fee. Differences in room charges that result from one person in a group cancelling shall be charged to the participating person(s).
