Tamatsukuri Hot Springs

visit west japan, visitwestjapan, shimane prefecture

Tamatsukuri Hot Spring area is not far from Tamatsukuri Onsen Station and is situated in a town that straddles the Tamayu River. The history of this district goes back over 1300 years, with a tale of a Japanese god giving birth to these healing waters.

There are around eighteen individual inns in Tamasukuri, whose name actually means “making beads”. One of the things that you will notice about Shimane is the strong relationship that the prefecture has with its history and the tama or bead deeply connected to it.

In fact, you will find depictions and renderings of the Magatama everywhere. These are teardrop-shaped talismans that were first used towards the end of the Jomon period around 3,000 years ago in Japan. They are considered fashionable even today and you can actually experience making one yourself in this ancient town.

Although every day is a good day in the Tamatsukuri Onsen area, the summer festival is the biggest event of the year. From the middle of July until the end of August, starting after 8pm, there are daily activities and performances for the whole family. The riverside is lit with beautiful white lanterns, creating a very special night festival experience.

Access: Take the Super Yakumo Express train from JR Okayama Station to JR Tamatsukuri Onsen Station. Take a 5 minute taxi ride to the hot spring area.

About the Area

Matsue is the vibrant capital city of Shimane Prefecture that has been shaped by its feudal heritage as a castle town and its unique location on Lake Shinji, Lake Nakaumi and the Japan Sea. The city center is dominated by the presence of Matsue Castle and its surrounding canals. This area is also a cultural zone as it is home to museums and historic quarters. One of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the city is from the water and there are several cruise companies that make this possible.
