Check out some artists' studios and an art gallery

Eki-Higashi Soko Studio

workshop
Free art gallery featuring quality work by local artists

ABOUT THE LOCATION

This expansive artists’ studio opened in 2007 when a local realtor turned a long-empty warehouse into workspace for artists. Entrance to the studios is free of charge, and guests can walk through the warehouse at leisure while enjoying artworks, talking to the artists and watching them work, and trying some hands-on art. In addition, some items are available for purchase on site.

The artists working in the studio represent a variety of art genres, including sculpture, textile weaving and dying, painting, woodcraft, wood carving, print making, leather bag making, and Bizen pottery.

With an advance reservation, guests may also try their hand at fabric dying, making Bizen pottery, and painting.

A free gallery at the rear of the studio is also worth a visit; quality work by local artists is featured here.

Next to JR Uno Station, Tamano-yu Hot Springs, and near the ferry port for Naoshima and Shodoshima, Eki Higashi Soko Studio is a great place to visit on your to or from the “art islands” in the Seto Island Sea.

ABOUT THE AREA

Tamano City is a port town on the southern edge of Okayama Prefecture known mainly for being home to Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding, which builds and maintenances some of the largest vessels on the sea.

Sitting directly against the Seto Inland Sea, Tamano boasts the prefecture’s largest public swimming beach at Shibukawa. In addition to swimming in summer, special sporting events such as national beach volleyball and beach soccer competitions are held here. Overlooking the beach, visitors and residents alike can enjoy the stunning view of the sea from the Ojigadake Bluffs. The bluffs are popular at sunrise and sunset year-round; a number of walking paths lead out to boulders on the edge of the bluffs.

Also noteworthy are the pieces of high quality contemporary art on public display in the downtown area at Uno Port; the pieces are part of the Setouchi Triennale 2014, but are on display year-round.

Additionally, Tamano City boasts the beautiful Miyama Park (with several cafes, a farmers’ market, hiking and walking trails, miniature and regular golf courses, a dog run, rent-a-cycle, an English garden, and seasonal events), and the Eki-Higashi Artists’ Studios where visitors can see art being made.

Tamano City connects with Takamatsu City in Kagawa Prefecture and many of the surrounding islands via ferry, which is easily accessible from the downtown area.
