Bitchu-no-Kuni Soja-gu is commonly referred to as ‘Soja Shrine’ in English and is the principal shrine of Soja City. Founded in 927, the shrine has been rebuilt a number of times throughout its history, including the complete reconstruction of the main hall in 1979 due to a fire that occurred two years earlier.

There are 324 gods enshrined at Soja Shrine and depictions of many of them can be seen through its grounds. These gods are manifestations of divinities in the Shinto spiritual system and often represent the forces of nature.

The landscaping is what truly sets Soja Shrine apart in that it has an expansive garden that features a pond full of ornamental carp. The pond has two bridges, both of which lead to island sanctuaries. The garden has captured nature and presented it in its ideal form.

Soja Shrine holds events throughout the year. For starters, there is a festival that takes place on the first of each month and starts at 9:00am. The spring festival is on May 5th and begins at 9:30am. The summer festival is celebrated in July on a Saturday, with the exact date and time announced as the event nears. The autumn festival  falls on the third Sunday in October.

Access: From JR Okayama Station, take the JR Hakubi Line to JR Soja Station. It is about a 20 minute walk from JR Soja Station. Alternatively, take the JR Momotaro Line to JR Higashi Soja Station. It is about a 5 minute walk west of JR Higashi Soja Station.
