An eclectic event space

Nomura Boshi-ten

One of Gofuku-dori’s most talked about and beloved buildings is Nomura Boshi-ten. This Showa era renaissance revival building was once a hat store and still retains some of the reminders of that past with vintage displays of the products and the tools of the trade in the shop window.

This former hat shop is now a part-time event space, where live concerts are held throughout the year. The traditional Japanese interior of the shop, which is accentuated by the rich color of deep brown wood and a timeless bar/restaurant/cafe feel, combine to create an unexpectedly natural environment for Indian classical music. In fact, tabla and sitar performances have been held at Nomura Boshi-ten with great success.

The shop is decorated with art objects of all kinds as well as memorabilia and photographs of the shop and its patrons over the years. Two of the outstanding features of the shop are the inner garden which is simply luminous on a sunny day, and the resident cat that is more than willing to strike a pose at a moment’s notice.

For one day in February, when the Naked Man Festival, which takes place at Saidaiji Temple is held, the owner of the space opens up his doors to add the air of excitement around the event. Participants hangout in the establishment, share experiences and even play musical instruments and sing together.

The future of Nomura Boshi-ten has not yet been decided but for now it will continue to be an event venue and a place where nostalgia can run wild.
