Opened in 2010, Hiruzen Winery is a full-service facility located in Maniwa City. This highland region produces excellent grapes which are used to make a variety of red, white, and rosé wines. The owner has been a wine lover most of his life and is eager to share about the unique grapes and methods used to produce the wine at this mountain villa.

Part of the winery’s mission is to help promote the region and attract new and return visitors, adding another facet to a diverse agricultural landscape. Although widely known for dairy, wine grape cultivation has been practiced in Hiruzen since the late 1970s.

Vitis Coignetiae (named after the botanical name of the winery’s signature mountain grape) is the name of the winery shop and eatery. The lunch menu ( served from 11am-2pm) consists of seasonally inspired lunch sets and galettes (a kind of crêpe ) served with soup and salad. Try a glass of the winery’s original mountain grape and jersey milk combination and a serving of mountain grape ice cream at the cafe (open 9am-4pm).

The shop is stocked with a selection of wine with tasting available when it is not too busy. Cheese and wine sets are can be purchased if you fancy a bit more than a taste and of course you can always buy a bottle of wine or two. Other items featured at the shop include mountain grape wine coolers, mountain grape, blueberry, apple and pear jam as well as mountain grape juice and fruit sauce.

Wine tasting and sommelier courses are available throughout the year and winery tours for groups of ten or more are available with advanced reservation. Plan a tour early in the morning then have lunch at Vitis Coignetiae, after which you can pick up a few items to take away from the shop.

Access: Take the Super Yakumo from JR Okayama Station to JR Niimi Station. Transfer to the Hakubi Line at JR Niimi Station. Take the Hakubi Line to JR Ebi Station. Hiruzen Winery is about a 25-minute taxi ride from JR Ebi Station.

About the Area

Maniwa City is a vast rural city that offers travelers the opportunity to enjoy lush scenery, agricultural goodness, outdoor activities, historic townscapes and relaxing hot springs.

The Hiruzen Highlands and the surrounding mountains largely define Maniwa’s natural environment. Highland pastures are home to the local dairy industry, which is at the forefront of milk and natural cheese production.

The mountains of the Hiruzen region are great for skiing and trekking, with the lowland areas offering excellent roads for cycling.

Katsuyama is a traditional town that is dominated by authentic Edo era storefronts, houses and warehouses. The town shops are famous for the curtains that decorate their entrances.

North of Katsuyama is the hot spring town of Yubara and its signature Yubara Dam. Enjoy an outdoor bath at the base of the dam or venture into one of the local spas.
