ABOUT Morita Sake Brewery in Kurashiki

Located in the heart of the Bikan Historical Quarter, on one of the most beautiful streets in Okayama Prefecture, you will find Morita Sake. With over 200 years of history in this section of the city, the heritage of this family business is literally painted on the walls.

When you walk into the brewery complex from the main entrance, you will be greeted by an expansive reception area where colorful award-winning boldly-labeled bottles of sake are proudly displayed. To venture beyond this point, you would have to arrange a group tour in advance.

After reserving a tour, you will have the opportunity to see the inner workings of what would have to be one of the largest sake brewery complexes located in a city center. Its beauty is found in the deep brown hues of its traditional structures, lattice-work walls and decorative details.

The second largest city by population in Okayama Prefecture, Kurashiki City is a popular regional, national and international tourist destination. The city offers visitors history, recreation, shopping, and nightlife in a vibrant setting.

For starters, Kurashiki Station is impressive in its own right. There are a variety of shops, restaurants and cafes that welcome thousands of travelers and commuters each day.

From the south exit of Kurashiki Station, a short walk will bring you to the authentically preserved Bikan district. This area has a large number of Edo era buildings, some of which date back to the 1700’s. The area itself has the feel of an Edo town as you stroll past the private residences, souvenir shops, eateries and galleries.

The Ohara Museum of Art and Ivy Square form the foundation of the Bikan district.  The willow-lined canal leading up to the museum provides the perfect backdrop for viewing works by some of the master impressionists in its collection.

The ivy covered brick of Ivy Square creates a brilliant contrast to the white and black patchwork design that dominates the Edo era architecture. You can lose yourself in the labyrinth of streets and alleyways to finally discover a hidden café in one of the many walled courtyards.

Kurashiki AEON Mall and Ario Shopping Center/Mitsui Outlet Shops are two of the city’s hotspots. AEON Mall is a short bus ride from Kurashiki Station and the Ario/Mitsui complex is right in front of the north exit.

If you want to explore other areas of the city, try Kojima. This town sits on the Seto Inland Sea is the place to go for handmade textiles. Kojima jeans are an example of a local product that has reached the top of the fashion world.
