Islands that offer a truly Setouchi experience

Kasaoka Island Chain

kasaoka city
Held annually between August 13th ~ 16th, this dance is an Important Intangible Cultural Property

The Kasoka Island Chain is made up of 31 islands that spread from Kasaoka City on the mainland into the Seto Inland Sea. Of the 31 islands, there are 7 main islands; they are Takashima, Shiraishijima, Kitagishima, Manabe Island, Kobishima, Obishima and Mushima. The islands are accessible by ferry, and are popular destinations for visitors who enjoy swimming at the beach, camping, and fishing.

The three most visited islands are Shirashishijima, Kitagishima, and Manabeshima. Shiraishijima has a small but great swimming beach, as well as hiking trails and and international guest house. The annual summer dance held between August 13th and 16th has been deemed an Important Intangible Cultural Property.

Kitagijima is the largest of the islands in the island chain; it is home to a large rock quarry, and its historical district features many houses made from stone.

Manabe Island was a prosperous fishing island in the Meiji period, and the historical district from that era remains. These days, the island is known for having a higher population of cats than humans! Manabe has captured the imagination of visitors from around the world.

A French storyteller and illustrator spent an extended period on the island and chronicled the lives of the those connected to this wonderful slice of the Seto Inland Sea. Published in both French and English, it makes for a great read and keepsake if you happen to come across a copy.

A quiet city, Kasaoka City is a nice place to visit nonetheless due to some unusual things to see and do. The most well-known attraction is the Kabutogani Horseshoe Crab Museum, which is dedicated to educating the public about horseshoe crabs. Young visitors will also enjoy strolling in the park next to the museum as the park is filled with life-sized replica (but realistic looking) dinosaurs.

Other attractions include the Ono Chikkyo Art Museum, Ikasa Railway Memorial Museum, Konoshima Temple Pilgrimage, Kasaoka Port Festival in July, Sunflower Festival in early August, Shiraishi Odori dance festival in mid-August, and the Konoshima Tenjin Festival in mid-September.

Ramen-lovers will love Kasaoka, as its many ramen shops offer a wide variety of delicious ramen, with each shop offering its own style of soup and toppings. There is even a ramen map published by the Kasaoka Ramen Development Project Committee that illustrates the type of ramen served in each shop.
