The largest collection of plant species in Japan

Makino Botanical Garden

Makino Botanical Garden holds a collection of 3000 different species, many of which were discovered and named after Dr. Tomita Makino. This garden is truly a national treasure that is a must-see for garden lovers. The grounds cover an area of over six hectares that offer the visitor opportunities of seeing the plants in their natural environment, made by the expert staff who work hard in creating and maintaining this mountain escape.

The best times to visit the garden are said to be in spring and fall when the colors are vibrant, but any time of the year will have something to surprise you. There are a number of buildings that house information of Dr. Makino’s life, his portfolio of drawings and spaces that offer interactive activities for people of all ages.

Throughout the garden there are plenty of areas to sit and rest, to soak up the panoramic views looking onto the Pacific Ocean and to smell the fragrance of the garden. There is also a cafe where you can enjoy herbal teas, or eat a light lunch. The souvenir shop has a great collection of goods to help you remember your time in the garden.
