Produced in 2010 as part of the Setouchi International Art Festival, this thought-provoking artwork by Shinji Ohmaki stands at Takamatsu Port like a 3-dimensional kaleidoscopic image that has been turned into a solid structure.

Ohmaki’s work often deals with the interpretation of space, time and color. This is evident in his prior and subsequent artistic displays and workshops. He has created installations within Japan and on the international stage that draw you in to his unique understanding of the world.

These two 8 meter high pillars stand side by side as if they were, as the artist puts it, “a gateway to Takamatsu”. He sees his creation as having the ability to make air, space and time visible. He is attempting to influence your perception of reality by imposing from, mass and color in an area where there is none.

These stainless steel structures are eight meters in height and situated near  close to the Takamatsu Port Ferry Terminal.

About the Area

Takamatsu City is the commercial center of Shikoku and has a urban feel that is befitting to the title. Its lovely boulevards and well-developed port area create an ambiance that is truly cosmopolitan.

Must-see spots for visitors include, Ritsurin Garden, Takamatsu Castle, the central shopping arcade and the port area art installations.

Yakuri Station is the entry point to the Yashima district of Takamatsu City, which is well-known for its temple near the summit of the unique and iconic table top-shaped Mt. Yashima. The vista from the mountain is highly-prized and well worth the effort to get there. However, to best appreciate its entire shape, the view from Sunport Takamatsu Symbol Tower is recommended.

Yashima is notable for its eateries, many of which serve the renowned local specialty, udon noodles.

Access: It is just a few minutes walk from JR Takamatsu Station.
