Nijushi no Hitomi or “Twenty-four Eyes” is a Japanese film that has come to be regarded as a classic around the world. Set in pre-war Japan, the movie follows the relationship of a school teacher and her twelve students as they grow up in this turbulent period. Shot in black and white, the film was released in in 1954, which is only a few years after the war. Given this, there must have been a cathartic element in its production.
Shodoshima provided the setting for the film, and the set itself has been preserved and transformed into a tourist destination. Located on a remote coastal inlet, the movie village consists of several Showa era (1926 – 1989) buildings. The schoolhouse is the center of attention with its tiny wooden desks and chairs facing the old-fashioned blackboard with a writing chart above it.
Another visitor favorite is the house that faces the sea on account of its sheer authenticity and controlled state of disrepair. You have to remind yourself that these structures were never used in real life and that they only played roles in a film. The attention to detail and the quality of construction that went into the entire set is just incredible.
