Car rental has caught up with the times and is heading into the future with the availability of fully electric vehicles at Shodoshima Furusato Mura/Michi-no-Eki. They offer a quiet ride at a reasonable rate, allowing you the freedom to see the sights at your own pace.

The Michi-no-Eki or “Road Station” is quite a welcomed sight, especially if you have been on the road for some time and are in need of a rest. In many ways the station seems geared to those travelling by car due to the ample parking but you can easily reach it by bus.

Apart from electric car rentals, you can also rent fishing gear and even buy bait to use at the nearby pier. You are allowed to stay the whole day and of course keep what you catch.

Start at the Michi-no Eki pier area and work your way out from there. You might even consider using it as your base as there are a variety of amenities on offer, including an eatery and a gift shop.

The Inoue Olive Garden is a superb example of local people pouring themselves into the concept of creating sustainable business within their community. As it is not far from the Road Station, it is well worth a visit.

Continue on to the 24 Eyes Movie Set Museum, where the classic film depicting the lives of children who lived through the turbulent years surrounding the war lives on forever. The set will move you even if you have never seen the film.

Access: Take the bus from JR Okayama Station (East exit terminal 1) to Shin-Okayama-Ko Port. Take the ferry from Shin-Okayama-Ko Port to Tonosho Port on Shodoshima Island. The electric compact car rental at Shodoshima Furusato Mura is about a 20- minute taxi ride from Tonosho Port. Alternatively, take the Olive Bus from Tonosho Port.

The second largest island in the Seto Inland Sea, Shodoshima belongs to Kagawa Prefecture, but is easily accessible from ferries running from Okayama Prefecture as well.

Shodoshima boasts several nice beaches, hot spring resorts, and beautiful coastal scenery on the exterior of the island, with a mountainous interior. Some of the sights on the interior of the island include the famous Olive Park, Kankakei Gorge and ropeway, and a monkey park.

Gourmands will enjoy touring a soy sauce museum to learn about the 400-year-old tradition of making soy products on the island. Sesame seed oil and olive products are also well-known items from the region. Popular sightseeing destinations on the exterior of the island include a soy sauce factory, and Angel Road, a sandbar that visitors can walk along at low tide to reach a small island (see SmartTour code SM-KAG-010).

Shodoshima is part of the Setouchi International Art Triennale; as such, several permanent installations of contemporary art are on view to visitors. The artwork creates a wonderful contrast between the modern and the traditional as well as the natural and human-made.
