Takamijima Island

Twenty art installations on the island that can be seen on foot

Brief Introduction

Takamijima is a Seto Inland Sea island that is under the administration of Tadotsu Town in Kagawa Prefecture. One of its notable features is that it is juts out from the sea, with its conical mountain rising up in stunning fashion. Around 100 people call the island home, with most of the residents living along the coast.

Takamijimi has made a name for itself as of late as an art island, taking part in the Setouchi Triennale Art Exhibition. There are about twenty art installations on the island that can be seen on foot in just a few hours.

The former junior high school on on the island is arguably the center of all artist endeavors as there are several large pieces on display there. People are truly living side by side with objects from the human imagination and in many ways, it is hard to say where everyday life on Takamijima ends and the art begins.

When you walk around the Edo era cobblestone-walled lanes that have stood the test of time for hundreds of years, you cannot help but think that there is artistry to be found in simply being on Takamijima.
