Oshima is an island that is located just off the coast of Takamatsu City, directly north of the famed Yashima peninsula. Its history is dominated by its use as, for all intents and purposes, a place of exile for patients suffering from Hansen’s Disease. They were treated and housed in a sanatorium on the island in a fashion similar to that found on Nagashima Island in Setouchi City, Okayama Prefecture.
A remarkably beautiful island with gentle slopes that provide an excellent vista of the Seto Inland Sea, there now approximately 100 year round inhabitants. They are the original residents who continue to live out their lives on an island that at one time they were not allowed to leave.
Fortunately, the passing of time has seen changes in the perception of Hansen’s Disease both socially and politically, with Oshima opening up to the public. Home to several art installations and projects, the island is part of the Setouchi Triennial Art Exhibition.
