I’ve been going to the shopping street at Hokancho since I first moved to Okayama back in 1998. On of the reasons is that it was one of the easiest places to get to for someone like me at the time because I primarily got around on foot.
It was and still is the more traditional of the two main shopping streets in Okayama, the other being Omotecho. The classic thing about it was that owners used to live above their shops and I always thought that it was cool not have to commute.
Where I grew up, in the States, shopping streets had long since fallen out of fashion so this was a whole new experience for me.
There are mom and pop groceries, curio shops, restaurants, cafes, bars and memorabilia stores to name a few. Every time I go I find something a little different.
