Wagasa (Japanese Umbrella) Akari Illuminations at Daisen-ji Temple

Daisen Area
August

Daisen-ji is the head of a consortium of temples on the slopes of Mt. Daisen. The main hall is elegant in its simplicity and the interior echoes the vermilion of the exterior walls, complementing the golden implements found throughout the space.

As part of the All-Souls celebration in August (O-bon), which welcomes the return of ancestors and loved ones who have passed away, brilliantly-colored traditional Japanese umbrellas are lit up around the Daisen-ji Temple complex in the evening.

This stunningly beautiful spectacle attracts visitors from across the region. There is a romantic quality that emerges from the soft light passing through the colorfully designed umbrellas.

A corridor of wonderfully lit umbrellas lead you to the main grounds, where you will find an additional dozen or so in front of the entrance to the temple. Some of them flicker like fireflies in the night.

You are welcomed to bring your smartphone and take pictures at designated areas for lasting memories of this decades-old event that has been added to an occasion that has been celebrated in one form or another on Mt. Daisen for over 1300 years.

Access: Take the Super Yakumo from JR Okayama Station to JR Yonago Station. Daisen-ji is about a 35 minute taxi ride from JR Yonago Station.

About the Area

Daisen Town is defined by the signature feature on its landscape, namely, Mt. Daisen. One of the advantages of visiting the district as a traveler is that you can explore the mountains and the seaside all in one day. Enjoy outdoor alpine activities on Mt. Daisen and make your way to all the mountain temples. Then head to the coast, where you will find not only a marvelous view but also some of the finest seafood the region has to offer.

Another good thing about being in western Tottori Prefecture is that you have easy access to Heizu Village, Sakaiminato City and Yonago City, as they are all along the coast. You could actually spend several days city, town and village hopping in this action-packed part of the prefecture.
