Josai is a district of Tsuyama City whose name means ‘west of the castle’. In early October there is a festival held in this beautiful old section of the city. The charming Edo era storefronts and merchant houses provide the backdrop to the festivities.
This riverside section of the city is so densely packed with historic buildings that you really need to spend a day to appreciate them. There are four temples and a shrine, in addition to the fact that Tsuyama Castle is in the neighborhood.
The Josai All-Museum Fair was conceived as a way to raise awareness of the history of this quarter of the city and promote its traditional industries and crafts.
There are stage performances that go on into the night and parades through the streets by participants dressed in festival costumes. It is an open invitation for visitors to explore every corner of the neighborhood while enjoying the goods on offer at the numerous stalls. The Tsuyama Josai Fair celebrates the cultural heritage of this special district west of Tsuyama Castle.
Access: Take the Tsuyama Line from JR Okayama Station to JR Tsuyama Station. The Josai Community Center is about a 25-minute walk or a 10-minute taxi ride from JR Tsuyama Station.
About the Area
Located in the heart of the Chugoku Mountains, Tsuyama is an inland city that is roughly at the halfway point between Tottori City, Tottori Prefecture and Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture. It has the charm of a small town and the urban elements that cities enjoy.
Tsuyama Castle is the historic focal point of the city and has to be considered one of the more impressive ruins in West Japan. This is primarily due to the massiveness and height of its walls and foundations. It offers an amazing panoramic view of the city. The structure at the site is an excellent reconstruction of the living quarters of the resident feudal lord.
