Every year Soja city holds its summer festival that draws locals to the riverside location. What makes this summer festival worth visiting compared to larger cities is the local flavor of food and activities that lend itself to more like a country fair experience.
You can expect to have the typical food stalls selling yakisoba (fried noodles with pork and cabbage), yakitori (bbq chicken on a stick), cotton candy, and toffee apples. But you will find local food, mizuame (water candy), Soja fried chicken, and Soja take of hot dogs.
This festival starts at 4pm and ends with a large fireworks show that lasts for close to 30 minutes. Throughout the day there are a number of activities, bingo that offers all ages the opportunity to win some amazing prizes, candy tossing which will get you running around to catch some free candy, and different traditional dances that are easy for visitors to pick-up and be able to join in. There are also live performances of local musicians, taiko drums, and dance acts from the local schools in the area.
Access: Take the Momotaro (Kibi) Line from JR Okayama Station to JR Soja Station. You can walk from the station to the river site, it will take about 20 minutes. Alternatively, you can walk to Soja City Office which is 5 minutes from the station, walking directly straight in front of the station and catch the free shuttle bus.
