This festival is held along the old main street of Soja dating back to the Showa era. It covers 3-4 blocks within the center of the city. The local businesses on the street, the private houses, and the cities cultural assets are all open for the public to visit.
Most of the cities clubs have exhibitions displaying their activities to promote their work and to also recruit new members. Private houses host a variety of cultural, musical or theatrical acts throughout the day and into the early evening. You can sit in beautifully preserved gardens, sipping on a glass of wine while listening to a classical guitar performance. Each area along the street offers something for everyone and allows visitors to glimpse back in time when life was simple and communities enjoyed a slower pace.
Some of the more interesting architecture is the old Showa movie theater, shops that still sell the same products they sold 50 years ago, these include some traditional Japanese foods of taiyaki (Japanese fish-shaped cake filled with red bean paste or custard), Japanese green tea shop that serve hot tea with Japanese sweets, and a old-style candy shop.
This festival is always held on a Saturday and is a pleasant way to spend the afternoon and evening with the friendly people of Soja.
Access: Take the Momotaro Line from JR Okayama Station to JR Soja Station. This street festival is about a 10 minute walk from the front of the station.
