Matsue City
April

Matsue Castle was completed in 1611 and on one auspicious day, Lord Horio Yoshiharu, accompanied by his family and troops came to take possession.

This moment in time has been captured and preserved in the Matsue Samurai Parade (Musha Gyoretsu) in Japanese. At the start of April, the people of Matsue remember this grand occasion by getting dressed in the regalia of the days of the samurai.

It takes more than 200 people to bring the event to life, with regional enthusiasts clamoring to play one of the roles in the procession. These include Lord Horio Yoshiharu and his wife, one of his daughters, the Lady Attendant, child warriors (not part of the historical event), the infantry and the cavalry.

About the Area

Matsue is the vibrant capital city of Shimane Prefecture that has been shaped by its feudal heritage as a castle town and its unique location on Lake Shinji, Lake Nakaumi and the Japan Sea. The city center is dominated by the presence of Matsue Castle and its surrounding canals. This area is also a cultural zone as it is home to museums and historic quarters. One of the best ways to appreciate the beauty of the city is from the water and there are several cruise companies that make this possible.

Access: Take the Super Yakumo Express train from JR Okayama Station to JR Matsue Station. Matsue Castle is about a 30 minute walk from Matsue Station.
