Tamano City
end of May to the middle of June

From the end of May to the middle of June, this Tamano City shrine becomes the mysterious night-time gathering place for thousands of fireflies. They whirl around the structures of the complex as if they had been summoned by the gods.

For Studio Ghibli fans, it is a scene right out of Hayao Miyazai animated film. One of his recurring themes is the idea of a place that seems abandoned or unused suddenly coming to life.

There are a few things that are worth keeping in mind before venturing to the shrine. First, it is located in a residential community that is somewhat off the beaten path so allow yourself some time to find it. As you will be heading out in close to darkness, it is a good idea to bring a flashlight (streetlights are limited in rural areas).

Access: Take the JR Uno Line from JR Okayama Station to JR Tsuneyama Station. It is about a 8 minute taxi ride from JR Tsuneyama Station to Koshimaji Hachimangu Shrine.

About the Area

Tamano City is an independent municipality situated on the coast of southern Okayama Prefecture. An extremely livable city, it is filled with a multitude of places where you can enjoy the nature. There is the ever-popular Shibukawa Beach and the timeless Miyama Park and Miyama English Garden. You can enjoy hiking along the trails of the Ojigatake Bluffs, which provide an all-encompassing view of the coast line from east to west, including Kojima Bay.

Sightseeing spots include the Tamano Marine Museum, which is popularly known as the Shibukawa Marine Aquarium and the many art installations that radiate out from Uno Station and on to Uno Port. Famed artists from around the world have contributed to the city’s development as a gateway to the world of art found on Seto Inland Sea islands such as Naoshima and Shodoshima.
