Started in 1993 in the once independent city of Matsunaga, which is now a town in Fukuyama City, the Geta Festival is a massive celebration of community spirit that has seen visitors top the 60,000 mark.
Geta are Japanese traditional footwear and in fact, to this day, the shoe industry is a big part of Fukuyama’s economy. So, local shopkeepers, community organizers and students of all ages get together to stage this annual spectacle.
Referred to as the Getalympics, the festival consists of a series of competitions between rival teams as well as individual challenges. One popular activity is the “clog toss”, where participants see how far they can hurl the geta from their feet.
The height of the festival is the pulling of an over one ton giant clog by attendees.
