Marugame City
Beginning of June

The Doronko Muddy Sports Festival is an expression of the joy that the people of Marugame City have for life. Held at the unlikely venue of a water-filled rice field next to a community center, it combines typical sports day activities such as the tug-of-war with team sports such as volleyball. Everything happens in a water and mud-filled rice paddy field minus the rice. The environment alone adds to the excitement because many of the participants probably never had the opportunity to set foot in one before.

Participants are divided into teams and arranged into categories. Points are allocated to the teams according to their performance in each competition. It is quite a sight to see people falling in the mud laughing and trying their best to execute a play or simply trying to get their footing. Judging from the looks on people’s faces, many just can’t believe the entire situation.

The veteran participants come prepared with swimwear and goggles, while newbies just make due with whatever they have on. The festival is more than just wallowing in the mud. There are stage performances as well, all set against the backdrop of the majestic Mt. Iino. The Doronko Muddy Sports Festival is open to everyone, so if you happen to be in the area at the beginning of June, you should come and join the fun. Experience the joy of life in this wonderfully muddy festival in Marugame City.

Access: Take the Marine Liner from JR Okayama Station to JR Takamatsu Station. Walk for about 5 minutes to Kotoden Takamatsu Chikko Station. Take the Kotohira Line from Kotoden Takamatsu Chikkou Station to Kotoden Okada Station. It is about an 8-10 minute walk to the Okada Community Center.

About the Area

Kagawa Prefecture is often referred to as the gateway to Shikoku because it hosts one of the footholds of the Seto Ohashi Bridge in Sakaide City. The bridge, which is the longest in the world to carry both passenger cars and trains, stretches across the Seto Inland Sea like a dragon in flight before touching down in Shikoku.

The capital of the prefecture and the largest city in all of Shikoku is lovely seaside Takamatsu City. It is a castle town which is famous for its port area and long shopping arcade.

Marugame City, like neighboring Takamatsu City is a renowned for its castle. However, as Marugame Castle rests at a high elevation, it commands an impressive view of the region. From the castle, there are panoramas of the cityscape, Mt. Iino (Sanuki Fuji) and the Seto Inland Sea.

Kagawa Prefecture is a champion of the arts and plays a large role in the Setouchi Triennale Art Festival, which as its name suggests, takes place every three years. There are art installations and museums throughout the prefecture.

The beating heart of the art scene in Kagawa is on several of its islands, namely, Shodoshima and Naoshima. There you will find an intriguing world dedicated to beauty and creativity.
