end of June
The Somen Noodle Festival is a part of Asakuchi City’s annual summer fun. Kamogata Town is home to several major noodle companies and each year they bring out their fresh hand-stretched products for this exciting event. The festival is extremely popular, with throngs of people in a frenzy for the delicious noodles.
The festival is held over a two day period at the end of June, just when the weather is starting to be consistently hot. This is important because somen noodles are typically served cold in a bowl of water with ice cubes. The noodles are taken from the bowl with chopsticks and then dipped in a light soy-based sauce before eating.
Somen noodles are released down a bamboo chute filled with flowing water twice a day during the two-day festival. Equipped with a bowl of sauce and a pair of chopsticks, participants have to try to catch the noodles as they come streaming down. As you can imagine, it’s quite a challenge, but it’s also great fun. Asakuchi Somen Noodle festival is a tasty way to cool off in the summer.
Access: Take the Sanyo Line from JR Okayama Station to JR Kamogata Station. Furusato Kamogawa Plaza is about a 10-minute walk from JR Kamogata Station.
