ABOUT kurashiki city
Kurashiki City is a popular regional, national and international tourist destination. The city offers visitors history, recreation, shopping, and nightlife in a vibrant setting.
The newly renovated JR Kurashiki Station is impressive in its own right; there are a variety of shops, restaurants and cafes that welcome thousands of travelers and commuters each day.
From the south exit of Kurashiki Station, a short walk will bring you to the authentically preserved Bikan Historical district. This area has a large number of wharehouses and merchant houses that date from the Edo period (1603-1868). Although a number of the houses in the back streets are still used as private residences , the majority of the wharehouses and buildings lining the canal have been renovated into museums, craft and souvenir shops, cafes and small eateries, and galleries.
The Ohara Museum of Art and Ivy Square form the foundation of the Bikan district. The willow-lined canal leading up to the museum provides the perfect backdrop for viewing works by the some of the master Impressionists in its collection. The ivy covered brick buildings of Ivy Square creates a brilliant contrast to the white and black patchwork design that dominates the main area of the Bikan district.
Kurashiki AEON Mall and Ario Shopping Center / Mitsui Outlet Mall are two of the city’s hotspots. AEON is a short bus ride from Kurashiki Station and the Ario / Mitsui complex is right in front of the north exit.
If you want to explore other areas of the city, try Kojima. This town on the Seto Inland Sea is the place to go for textiles, including world-famous Kurashiki denim.
