100 Islands of Setouchi

Where you can discover the old and the new with a sea breeze to guide you

Brief Introduction

Welcome to our newest feature section that aims to open up the wonders of the islands of the Setouchi region. With 727 islands in this area, we will be highlighting 100 islands that feature aspects of Japanese life that are so unique that once you start this island hopping journey, you will not want to stop!

Local news programs around country often greet viewers with the phrase, “Good Morning, Japanese Archipelago!”. However, perhaps due to the relatively large size of the four main islands of Honshu, Hokkaido, Kyushu and Shikoku, many people lose sight of the fact that there are actually nearly 7,000 islands scattered throughout the main land masses.

The islands of the Seto Inland Sea, which stretch from Kyushu to the Kansai region, are so plentiful that you could spend months exploring them. Though geographically bound by the sea and a history of seafaring trade and commerce, they each have distinct cultural elements and unique traditions.

Another fascinating aspect of the Setouchi region is that art appreciation and interactive ecotourism have been developed as a gateway through which visitors from around the world can experience the islands.
